Jaycees' Toys for Tots drive a success

Last week's Russell County Jaycees' Toys for Tots auction was a big
success, according to Jaycee Chad Pendleton, the program's chairman.
Nearly 400 items were auctioned during the two-night event last
Thursday and Friday at Duo County Telecom in Jamestown.
"It went quite well," Pendleton said. "It was down a
little bit this year but that was expected due to the economy"
The auction, which has been held every Thanksgiving for decades, was
broadcast live on both Laker Country, 104.9 FM and on Duo County's
Community channel 2.
All profits from the the auction is going to be used to buy gifts for
children whose families need assistance this holiday season.
Pendleton said anyone still wishing to donate cash, checks or
unwrapped toys to the program can do so at anytime by contacting any
Jaycee, or himself at 270-858-9178.
Also, families needing assistance this Christmas should call the
local Family Resource Centers at 270-343-2056 or 270-866-7850.
There is also a race event set at the Lake Cumberland Dragway with
the proceeds to go to purchasing presents for the children as well.
"Since the auction was down some this year we're very happy to
partner with the dragway," he said.
The Lake Cumberland Dragway's first annual Holiday Bash starts Friday
at 5 p.m. with test and tune. Gate admission is $7 Friday night.
The bulk of racing begins Saturday at noon with gates opening at 10
a.m. Gate admission for Saturday is $10.
This will be the last race of the season at the track and all
Saturday proceeds go toward the Toys for Tots program.
"We're expecting a big turnout, weather permitting,"
Pendleton said.
While Pendleton said sometimes the Jaycees get overwhelmed and bogged
down with the planning of the fair and their other events, the Toys for
Tots program each year make it all worthwhile.
"It gives us a pretty good feeling," he said. "It
makes you want to keep on doing it every year."
Pendleton wanted to thank all the local merchants who donated items
to the auction.
"We appreciate them so much," he said. "Without them,
there would be no program."
